Tall Firs feature in new film Night Of 1000 Laughs, release first part of audio tour diary

Last Wednesday Tall Firs embarked on a five week tour opening for Jeff Mangum. See below for the start of their tour diary…

We can also announce that the band will feature (as themselves, and on the soundtrack) in the the upcoming documentary Night Of 1000 Laughs by Matt Elkind.

Ages ago, Dave and Aaron- otherwise known as Tall Firs- and a handful of their friends, were bullied into performing standup comedy. One of those friends made a documentary about the whole dare/ birthday party/ fraternity hazing/ whatever the evening turned into, and left it on the shelf for a long, long time. Years later, with a professional career in television long underway, he dusted it off, edited it down, and scored it with Tall Firs tunes. The result is a truly uncomfortable, hilarious and touching film: Night Of 1000 Laughs.  After Dave’s performance sees the light of day, he’ll have to go into hiding…

Matt Elkind has spent much of his career in television, riding a wave of unscripted programming to a packed credit list as a cinematographer, director and producer. First, on the FOX hit Trading Spouses and then on Bravo’s Real Housewives franchise.  Matt also was the co-DP with Josh Mayes on the 28-hour tv series that followed behind the scenes for the final season of the Oprah Winfrey Show. Night of 1000 Laughs is Matt Elkind’s first documentary feature as a director.

You can view the Teaser Trailer at http://nightof1000laughs.tumblr.com/

Aside from their dates with Jeff, Tall Firs will be performing at a screenings of the film next Tuesday night 1/22/13 at Mud + Water, Baton Rouge LA.

Praise for ‘Out Of It And Into It’ (ATP Records):

“[A] twin guitar looming, rising to a twin guitar vague threat. Album of the Week.” – Sunday Times

“[S]pacious and haunting…an absorbing set that feels delicate in places and then brutal in others.” – Clash

“Despite its brief 33 minute running time, this record’s shroud of gloom is oppressively relentless.” 0 Drowned in Sound

Praise for ‘Too Old to Die Young’ (Ecstatic Peace!):

“[E]lements of ‘Too Old to Die Young’…have…been used before by…New York bands from Patti Smith to Television to Talking Heads, but the way Tall Firs blend them results in something lusher than any of the others could muster” – NME

“[S]un blessed beauty…The Firs have cut out the fuzz and moved into a twinkling star light territory of guitars and stuttering drums.  Pop in the sweetest of traditions, these songs amble along, weaving organically and ending inconclusively.  Thank god.”  – AU

Praise for  ‘Tall Firs’ (Ecstatic Peace!):

“[T]hese songs possess a sense of simmering tension, where lugubrious lyricism and instrumental drift do not detract from a poised delivery and a subtle but thoughtful use of contrasting shades. The acoustic-electric interplay suggests a kind of rootless, melodic modernity…” – Wire

“In gems like “The Breeze” and “The Woods,” their duo vocals are moody, without squawking in that already dated freak-folk style; the guitars are occasionally colored by chimes, organ and brushed drums. “Go Whiskey” has the high, lonesome shiver of an old Townes Van Zandt record, except without any obvious country affectations. If your idea of staying warm on a winter night is a bottle of bourbon and a bleak memory, Tall Firs will make excellent company.” – Rolling Stone

“Wait, those guys are Tall Firs? I have that record. I like that record.” – Jeff Tweedy (Wilco)

“Tall Firs! You’re wasted!” – Bradford Cox (Deerhunter)

“I love cats.  I don’t understand them, I’m just a fan.  I want to be their roadie.” – Michael Rother (NEU! Guitarist, Tall Firs roadie)

“The good frothing gods of all glowing games”  – Jeff Mangum (Neutral Milk Hotel)

On Tour with Jeff Mangum in the USA Jan 8 – Feb 16

We are ecstatic to announce that we’ll be on tour with Jeff Mangum for his entire upcoming trample through the USA. I’ll leave it to some sleuth of internet history to figure out how many years it’s been since the Tall Firs took to the highways and byways of North America in search of the elusive Permanent Goode Tyme. But I will say we are particularly excited that we have only played in one or two of the cities (¡Can’t remember!) on this list before. In Jeff’s words:

“hello friends in a flock of finches unfolding from the face of a foam horse on the phone to inform you that jeff is heading out for one last u.s. acoustic tour, giving him the chance to play to all the silver citizens dwelling in citys that he has yet to sing in.”
